Mister + Mrs Sharp Travel : New York City

We love New York.  It's the center of the universe and it's an easy two hour flight for us.  It would be irresponsible not to go.

We plan.  We're planners.  We want to make the most of our time and enjoy the restaurants, museums and theater experiences of the moment, but we also try to carve out a little time to relax and enjoy the surroundings the way a local might.  Say, in the park or a bustling coffee shop where the people watching is good.  This year we add some design work and shopping, but as you might suspect, we enjoy that too.

Our 11th anniversary is this May and we will celebrate in the city.   We thought we would post our plans here on the blog and we'll post a follow up to let you know how it goes.

We recently found ourselves at a dinner party seated next to the International Editor-at-large for Vogue, Hamish Bowles, who makes his home in Manhattan.  It was such an honor and he was so gracious in conversation and generous with his wealth of knowledge.  We couldn't leave that conversation without asking his favorite dinning spots in New York.  They include two places not far from where he lives in the city: Claudette and Nix.  We have secured reservations at both.

We are clearly excited about the food, but a close second to the food are the museums.  In May, The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts the Met Gala.  This year, the Gala opens the exhibit "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic imagination".   We'll be there just in time for the exhibit,  which starts on May 10th.

"The Costume Institute's spring 2018 exhibit - at the Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters - will feature a dialogue between fashion and medieval art from The Met collection to examine fashions's ongoing engagement with the devotional practices an…

This year we are lucky enough to be in town during the Kips Bay Decorator Show House.   Our friend Mark D. Sikes has designed a space, so we are looking forward to seeing his brilliance along with all of the other designers in this the ultimate of all designer show-houses.

Speaking of design, we'll also be heading to the New York Design Center for the first time.  We'll take in the whole vibe and experience, but we are specifically going to check out Lepere.

What's better than food and design?  Combining them.  La Mercerie is a new restaurant by the folks from the Roman and Williams design store.  Apparently one can buy the dishes and the floral arrangements after one dines.  This is where we may linger over a second cup of coffee.

For us no trip to New York would be complete without a theater experience.  As of the time of this post, we still haven't decided which show to see.  We've narrowed the field down to three. Last years Tony winner for best musical, Dear Evan Hanson, The Lincoln Centers well reviewed production of My Fair Lady staring Lauren Ambrose (Another mention from Mr. Bowles) or Laurie Metcalf's latest role in the playThree Tall Women.

We stay in a different hotel every time we visit New York.  This trip we are trying Ian Schragers new Public Hotel.  We haven't been to the hotel yet but the press is good: "Hotelier Ian Schrager has once again conjured a stylish, buzzy hotspot in which the beautiful people eat, drink, dance ... and work on their laptops.  The rooftop bar, with it's 360-degree views over the city, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant are not to be missed."
